Congratulations on committing to your first race. I will be honest, triathlon is expensive. Wading through the must-haves and nice-to-haves can be quite intimidating. The following resources include the must-haves the need-to-knows and answer many questions you have as a beginner. We have all been the newbie at one time. I hope to make this transition to triathlete simple for you.
USA Triathlon Membership — Join or Renew. You need this to compete and Pink Otters requests it. And you get a monthly publication, as well as some cool discounts through their partners.
USA Triathlon Rules (competition etc)
Swim: the most technical aspect of the race. If you are not a seasoned swimmer, take the time to learn. Invest in some private or small group training.
Swim Needs: swim cap, swim suit, goggles, fins, possibly a snorkel
Bike: the longest part of the race. You need to put in quality time on your bike. Get comfortable being in the saddle. Bike skills are an important part of riding and racing. Visit our resource page and learn more.
Bike Needs:
- Helmet (for your head) Media — Choosing a helmet, Fitting your helmet.
- Bike — a proper bike fit can save you time and money. Use a calculator to determine your needs, or see a bike fit specialist. For a specialist fees can be around $350 for a comprehensive fit and/or to determine the best bike for you.
- Spare Tires and tire levers to remove tires– (and knowing how to change them, and do basic maintenance on your bike). Many bike shops offer workshops/clinics. When riding you need at least one tube, better served two, with the proper stem length and valve to match your pump.
- Air pump or CO2 pump
- Tools — allen wrenches, chain tool and links, screwdriver. These may not be as important when riding in your neighborhood or at team practices, but are good to have for long, solo rides.
- As a beginner, you may not need to invest in cycling shoes and clip-in pedals (unless you are already riding with these). Cycling shoes are a skill set that requires time to practice.
Run: shoes, zip laces
Food and Hydration: Be certain to have appropriate fuel and water for training rides and races.
